In this day and age of electronic screens and shared information, most of us are drawn to look in every direction at every given moment. I’ve always been one to turn my head toward each spot where someone or something is calling out for my attention, digital or otherwise. Allowing myself to retreat to the meditative process of building through stitching or painting, filming and editing, or writing without AI assistance, provides me with a sense of order.
How does an artist open themselves up to the way things are, like a funnel that leads to a sieve that filters information in order for one to create distinctive works of art? How does an artist choose what is needed? Our histories, preferences, life-circumstances, as well as the ways we choose to contribute to our communities, all inform the process and the end result. The activity of making and presenting a body of work is my attempt to gather, filter, create and share.
My paintings often explore the esoteric in the corporeal. Shapes and figures feel like biological explorations- what lives under the skin. Creatures expose their teeth and eyes express wonder or terror or some kind of "knowing." Patterns are formed through my process of play and concentration and they take the viewer on a journey through chaotic landscapes or create the illusion of dimensionality.
Though my concepts vary, there is always a thread that ties my work together recognizable as my own. It can be viewed as a "lo-fi" aesthetic. No matter the body of work, I like to consider how my process is received by those who come in contact with my art. What is the appropriate setting for the work? There’s Youtube for dance rituals while I’m dressed like a stereotypical art teacher- stressed out, but funny and hopeful. There are non-traditional shop spaces instead of galleries for art events that feel welcoming and rebellious. There are galleries to show people that what I’m doing is serious....
No matter the medium, concept, or space, I put things together with a combination of freedom and a set of self-determined rules. Accretion means a lot to me. I like to think of creative "building" as something similar to the development of a tree or a leaf or even smoke flowing through the air. It is tremendously exciting when intuition, practice, and materiality translate to a realized, bigger “thing.”
